The Site

Located at 601 Dr. MLK Jr. Blvd., Newark Makerhoods is restoring the historic Krueger-Scott Mansion and building a new mixed-use development on the grounds where the stables and gardens once existed.

The Krueger-Scott Mansion will transform into office, event, and coworking space with a special focus on entrepreneurship. The office space, event spaces, and coworking memberships will be available to individuals, businesses, non-profits, and other organizations.

The new construction will include:

  • 66 1, 2, and 3-bedroom apartment units, 25% will be affordable housing

  • 10 roughly 650 sqft commercial spaces

  • A shared commercial kitchen

  • Demonstration kitchen and event space

  • A greenhouse

  • Approximately 4,000 sqft courtyard

  • Above-ground parking

The project is planned to be complete in 2020.

The Goal

The ultimate purpose of this project is to recruit 18 small business owners to live, work, and grow their business in a supportive community.

Newark Makerhoods will focus on two industry clusters: food and fashion.

  • 8 Food & Beverage Makers (e.g. baked goods, caterers, condiments, soups, etc.)

  • 8 Fashion & Beauty Makers (e.g. apparel, footwear, handbag, hats, jewelry, beauty, and other accessories)

  • 2 Neighborhood Services Makers (e.g. coffee shop, laundry service, shipping & printing services, etc.)
