Newark Makerhoods

The Site

Located at 601 Dr. MLK Jr. Blvd., Newark Makerhoods will launch a Center for Entrepreneurship in the historic Krueger-Scott Mansion by transforming it into a co-working space and event venue. Construction of a new mixed-use development on the grounds where once the stables and gardens existed will include:

  • 66-unit, mixed-use development with 25% affordable housing
  • 10, 650 square foot makershops
  • Newark Food Factory, a shared-use commercial kitchen and 4,000 square foot greenhouse 
  • Courtyard that connects all the buildings and above ground covered parking garage

The project is planned to be complete in 2020.

The Makers

Newark Makerhoods will focus on two industry clusters: food and fashion. 

  • 8 Food & Beverage Makers (e.g. baked goods, caterers, condiments, soups, etc.)
  • 8 Fashion Makers (e.g. apparel, footwear, handbag, hats, jewelry, beauty, and other accessories)
  • 2 Neighborhood Services Makers (e.g. laundry service, shipping & printing services, coffee shop, etc.)

Number and makeup of Makers is subject to change.

Maker Criteria

  • Demonstrated proof of business concept and market demand
  • New Jersey business registration and applicable licensing and insurance
  • Growth-oriented business plan with financial projections 
  • Team player with an entrepreneurial spirit and eagerness to develop as a business owner
  • Willingness to work and live on-site at Newark Makerhoods
  • Recommendation letter from a business development organization or community advocate
  • Preferred Applicant: Newark residents with household incomes at 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI); entrepreneurs from traditionally underrepresented demographics  

The Maker Package

  • Food and beverage businesses: Dedicated kitchen space in a shared commercial kitchen with a dedicated desk
  • Fashion and beauty-related businesses and/or neighborhood services: 650 square foot commercial space
  • A one, two- or three-bedroom apartment
  • Business support services focused on growing sales through mentorship, back-office support, marketing help, and more

The fee for the makerspace, apartment, and support services starts at $1,800 per month. Actual cost may vary depending on apartment size.

The Application Process

The official application will be launched in 2019. Selected applicants will be interviewed by a selection committee.
